Why Doesn't My Doctor Know About This?

If spinal decompression works, why hasn't your doctor mentioned it? The answer has more to do with the healthcare system than with the therapy itself.

The short answer

It's a System Problem, Not a Legitimacy Problem

Your doctor hasn't mentioned spinal decompression for the same reasons they may not mention many specialized conservative therapies: short primary care appointments, established referral pathways that favor certain specialties, uneven exposure during training, and insurance structures that shape what gets routinely recommended.

None of those factors says anything about whether the therapy is legitimate. They reflect how the healthcare system is organized — and the gap between what's available and what patients are told about.

Training gaps

Medical School Doesn't Cover Everything

Medical school curricula vary widely in how much they cover non-surgical spine care. Conservative therapies are often underemphasized compared with medication and surgical pathways. A primary care physician may have had extensive training in pharmacology and very little exposure to mechanical spine rehabilitation.

That isn't a criticism of physicians. It's how medical education is structured. Doctors can't recommend what they weren't trained on — and many simply haven't been exposed to the current research, equipment or protocols used in spine-specific rehabilitation.

"If my doctor doesn't know about it, should I trust it?"

Awareness varies by specialty, region and individual interest. The therapy is used by medical doctors, osteopaths, nurse practitioners, physical therapists and chiropractors — and physicians have studied it: a 1994 paper in the Journal of Neurosurgery measured how vertebral axial decompression changed the pressure inside the disc.

The question isn't whether your primary care doctor has heard of it. It's whether the evidence and the clinical reasoning support exploring it for your condition.

Referral networks

The Referral Pathway Wasn't Built for This

Primary care physicians typically send back and neck complaints on to orthopedists, physiatrists or pain management specialists. Those referral pathways were built over decades, and they tend to favor physical therapy, injections and surgical consultation — care that fits neatly into insurance coding and reimbursement.

Spinal decompression doesn't fit those pathways. It's usually delivered outside the insurance system, by providers who may not be in the physician's referral network. If it isn't in the pathway, it doesn't get mentioned — even when the physician would find it clinically reasonable. Why insurance doesn't cover it

Historical damage

Early Marketing Hurt Credibility

In the early years of spinal decompression, some equipment manufacturers made exaggerated claims — "86% success rate," "guaranteed disc repair" and similar language that responsible clinicians found off-putting. Some physicians who ran into those claims dismissed the therapy entirely without looking at the underlying mechanisms.

That early overclaiming left a credibility wound the field is still healing from. This platform exists partly to repair it — by presenting decompression in medically respectable language, with conservative claims, in a way a physician can evaluate on its merits.

Awareness isn't the same as legitimacy.

Many patients find spinal decompression through their own research, or through specialists who focus on non-surgical care. Your doctor's awareness — or lack of it — reflects the system, not the science.

A note on your doctor

Bringing It Up With Your Physician

If you'd like to discuss decompression with your doctor, go ahead. The measured, evidence-based information on this site is written to support exactly that kind of conversation.

This is not an argument against your doctor

Primary care physicians manage an extraordinary range of conditions under real time and system pressure. That spinal decompression isn't part of every primary care doctor's knowledge reflects the limits of the healthcare system — not the competence of your physician.
